Have You Tried Homemade Shampoo Recipes For Your Hair?

It is my opinion that cleansing one’s hair should be done on a regular basis – of course, that basis has to be determined by each individual – their personal preference being a guideline.

While that might not be the only factor to making a decision, I do believe that:

What makes that role important or not, is all narrowed down to some of the points I will outline below.

Let’s start with personal preferenceNow, we are individuals, we do not always conform to the accepted ‘norm’, whatever that might be construed as. There are ‘rebels with and without a cause’ everywhere. Ultimately, you get to choose what works best for YOU at that time and place in your circumstances.

Each individual’s choice is determined by simple things such as:

  • social circumstances – whether our family or friends impose on our decisions
  • housing situation and the convenience to do as and what we choose
  • time available and priority ranking – today or 30 days from now
  • self-worth and personal hygiene – how we choose to allow ourselves to be depicted.

There are no ‘set rules of the game’, we all make our choices to suit ourselves at that point in time.

Then we need to look at environmental conditions. The more common conditions  we face living in today’s world can range from:

  • a bright sunny day
  • storms – rain, sand
  • humidity
  • snow
  • wind
  • smog or soot (in industrial areas)

Each condition without a doubt helps to determine the necessity to cleanse one’s hair and also to determine the frequency as well. You can start off your day all nicely coiffed and head out your door on your way to work, feeling and looking like a freshly minted coin.

And as soon as you get out your car, walking on your way inside to your office building, down comes the rain, and so much for that – not just the hair, but the clothing as well. We need to be in cohorts with Mother Nature to ensure that we can ‘play the role’ when the ‘die is cast’. In short, being prepared to maintain our hair whenever we are in an environmental ‘tight spot’, and needing to do things differently.

This brings us to the next point of our discussion, genetics. We are all blessed with different hair textures. This also means that our hair care routine will most likely be different to bring out the best in every kind of hair. And because of this, the needs for cleansing will vary.

Sometimes, if your hair is more prone to be oily, you might find yourself cleansing it more often than someone whose hair is more prone to be dry. One suffers from too much oil on the scalp which then trickles down to the hair shaft; while the other does not have enough oil to lubricate the hair shaft and the best way to handle this, is either to add more oil to their hair care, or to allow their own natural oil (sebum) to build up to further nourish their strands.

Then there are the more straight strands of hair which need more cleansing than its more curly counter part. The textures tend to also allow dust and oil to attach itself to the hair differently. Genetics has its role to play. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the individual’s motivation and determination to be their best when it comes to hair care.

And finally, but by no means least, is the factor of the cultural habits. In some cultures, the hair is not cleansed very often. For example, in Chad, the African women – Basara Arabs – whose hair grow very long, they wear their hair mixed in a homemade mixture (touted to be very moisturizing and strengthening) for long periods of time. Honestly, I do not know if they wash their hair. They just apply this homemade mixture to their hair over a period of days.

There are the Indian women, who wash their hair a little differently as well. They tend to wash their hair more often due to their use of natural oils and powders. It really all depends on a lot of different factors, individually or even combined.

Homemade Shampoo Recipes

Contrary to what people think, a shampoo is simply a cleanser and it does not have to have bubbles in order to be effective…that is just the myth around the word itself. Here are a few natural shampoo recipes without bubbles and I know that they will still get the job done.

Clay Wash Shampoo Recipe

Bentonite clay

Apple cider vinegar

Water

Method

Now, as you can see, there are no quantities listed, simply the ingredients. That is basically your choice which depends on:

  • hair length
  • hair volume
  • hair fullness
  • and the consistency you like.

I usually use a ratio of 1:1. For example, when I do a mud wash, I use 8 tablespoons of clay to 8 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and add enough water to get my desired consistency – which would also depend on whether I am doing this on freshly co-washed hair or dry hair.

You don’t want all the wash, washing your shoulders, face or entire body for that matter, well, at least not at this time. Once you have mixed the ingredients, simply apply to the length of your hair and once all your hair is covered, you allow the mud to penetrate your hair for 15-20 minutes covered with a plastic cap. Then rinse really well and the result will be soft and clean hair, ready for the next step of your hair care regimen.

You can see my Amazon Best Seller Aztec Clay Review below as well.

I found this video on Youtube demonstrating the clay wash.

Baking Soda Shampoo Recipe

Baking soda

Water

Method

The ratio of this combination is 1:8…meaning – 1 tablespoon baking soda to 8 tablespoons of water. Yes, you can measure water using a tablespoon. Things don’t need to be difficult or exact.

DIY recipes all depend on the individual and their needs. It always helps to make enough for the purpose versus having too much left over and then worrying about the shelf life and where to store it to extend its effectiveness.

Once you mix the ingredients, you simply massage into your hair, focusing on your scalp. The baking soda will make the oil and accumulated dirt on your hair dissolve. Let the mixture sit on your hair for about 10 minutes while hair is covered with a plastic cap. And then you rinse very well. This should leave your hair soft and clean, ready for your conditioner and the rest of your hair care regimen.

Cornstarch Dry Wash Shampoo

Cornstarch

Method

This has to be one of the simplest recipes ever! If you find that time eludes your beauty needs, this can be a quick fix. Simply, put a few tablespoons of cornstarch in a little bowl and take it with you to the bathroom. Then simply brush the cornstarch through your hair.

The cornstarch will adhere to the oils on your hair strands and then will be removed with brushing. Of course, only add enough to do the job – you don’t want to look like a blond if you are a brunette!

My Final Thoughts On Homemade Shampoo Recipes

I am a big advocate for using natural products for your hair care, so, naturally (no pun intended), I tend to gravitate to making my own hair products from natural sources. I would love to hear your feedback and maybe any interesting and effective recipes that you might have to share.

Thank you for stopping by.

I really think these natural remedies for shampoo will be much gentler on the hair than all of the brand names that you find in the supermarket.
They have way too many chemicals for my liking!
Some great choices here, thanks 🙂

      Hello there, John.
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I agree wholeheartedly with you about hair products and the chemicals that they have on their labels. We really need to be more aware of this issue. Regrettably, the prolonged use is not a good thing for our hair health or even our general health. The more we try out and use more natural products for hair and body health, I suspect, the healthier we will be.
Please let me know if you try any of the recipes and how they worked out for you.
