What Are Subliminal Messages?

subliminal messages from your brain to your hair

According to Wikipedia, ‘Subliminal stimuli (/sʌbˈlɪmɪnəl/; literally “below threshold”), contrary to supraliminal stimuli or “above threshold”, are any sensory stimuli below an individual’s threshold for conscious perception.'[1]

A recent review of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies shows that subliminal stimuli activate specific regions of the brain despite participants being unaware.[2]

Visual stimuli may be quickly flashed before an individual can process them, or flashed and then masked, thereby interrupting the processing. Audio stimuli may be played below audible volumes or masked by other stimuli.’

In layman terms, subliminal messages are what you tell yourself that you want to happen. You tell yourself often enough to believe that it can and will happen. It is a realistic version of mind over matter. You allow yourself to believe that what you desire can indeed be a possibility. And, it is my belief that you also act accordingly.

Now that we have gotten that out of the way, let’s look at how we can be influenced by subliminal messages – how is it done.

How Does One Use Subliminal Messages?

One can be influenced by subliminal messages in three basic ways:

  • subvisual
  • subaudible
  • backmasking

Subvisual Method

With this method, visual clues are flashed before participants ( as fast as a few milliseconds) that they do not actually perceive them. Think of television ads especially when they are promoting restaurants or fast foods.

Subaudible Method

In this case, there are low volume audio cues which are present in a much louder audio source, for example – music.

Backmasking

With this method, the audio message is recorded backward, and the whole idea of doing this is to play it forward and then disguise the reversed message.

It has been said that subliminal messages have played quite a role in:

  • advertising
  • movies
  • music

Of course, based on evidence in whatever field, the thoughts have mostly led to an open jury – still up in the air. Though, there have been some studies to prove that there is some truth to the subliminal messages claims.

I should point out a few things which might or might not make subliminal messages work:

  • there must be a need in order for the subliminal message to work – they will not control your behavior, just simply influence your choice.
  • the self-help recordings – the more common ones which are supposed to help with weight loss, smoking, et al. They do help somewhat (Greenwald, Spangenberg Pratkanis, & Eskanazi 1991), however,  it can be contributed to the idea of the placebo effect and not the subliminal messages on their own.

One has to really be very objective when it comes to subliminal messages.

My Experience With Subliminal Messages

I have used subliminal messages in the past. I love to trade stocks on the stock market. Sometimes, I do great, and sometimes, not so motivating, especially for my bank account.

So I decided to use subliminal messages. I was introduced to this NLP practitioner who had a recording of becoming a better trader. The recommendation is that you play the recording before you go to sleep.

Funny enough, I would fall asleep somewhere near the middle of the tape. I would wake up later in the night and sometimes, restart the tape and go back to sleep. I did this consistently for 21 days – the amount of time that psychotherapists say that it takes to form a habit.

Ok, so I know you are asking, ‘Did it work? Did I start trading better and phenomenally?’

Well, I did not see any proof of the pudding. My trading is still so-so. I don’t know if I missed something or if my mind needed another connecting part to this recording. The jury is still out on this one – yet again.

Will It Help Your Hair Growth?

Now, I am wondering if it will make a difference to my hair growth. I do not have a recorded message to play but I sure have the desire and the conviction that this is what I want to happen with all my being.

I would like to share an interview that I did with NJoy, the owner of her own natural hair products line – read more about the article here.

She claims to have used subliminal messages along with a vision board to grow her hair more than the ‘usual 6 inches a year– she achieved record growth in one year, I think around 10 + inches. She went from shoulder length hair to waist length hair in approximately 8 months – 12 months.

Phenomenal!!

I find it inspiring.

Of course, this thought process coupled with proper hair care maintenance, dietary intake, and healthy habits were part of the process. She did not do it ‘alone’, Mother Nature chipped in as well.

I am sure that there might be other untold stories in our world with similar success stories. I encourage you to share them in the feedback section below. I would love to hear them.

There is actually an article that I wrote on Quora, where there are people with the same curiosity about subliminal messages and hair growth.

Your Personal Clinical Study

I think if you are a very motivated individual with an obsession (I know this is a strong word, however, it serves its purpose here to convey the passion) to grow longer hair, then might I suggest that you try doing a long-term research on subliminal messages and hair growth.

Get together a few other like-minded individuals, create some guidelines, a recording, and see what gives in a specific period of time. I would love to hear the results.

My Final Thoughts On Subliminal Messages For Hair Growth

Even though it did not work for me and my stock trading,  I am willing to embark on another journey with my hair growth as a challenge. I will try and see if there is any truth to this process. I just might take the time to make a recording and play it before I fall asleep and while I sleep. Who knows? It certainly can’t hurt, that’s for sure.

There is a lot to be said about subliminal messages – skeptics, believers, and scientists. However, the only true way of knowing is the application, documented by results in a clinical environment.

Can subliminal messages influence your thoughts and behaviors? I am sure they can. However, I do believe that no one can make you do anything that you do not want or choose to do.
