What Is A Hair Brush?

This article will look at the 10 Best Professional Hair Brushes 2019, the various types of hair brushes, how to clean your hair brush, and the benefits of brushing. A hair brush is simply a styling tool for your hair. You can use it at home or in a salon by a professional stylist.

According to Wikipedia: ‘A hairbrush is a stick brush with rigid or soft bristles used in hair care for smoothing, styling, and detangling human hair, or for grooming an animal’s fur. It can also be used for styling with a curling iron or blowdryer.’ It was first introduced 1854 and patented and then in 1870, they came up with another type of hair brush.

How Does Brushing Help Your Hair?

Brushing your hair has a few benefits. Growing up, I just to read about brushing your hair 100 strokes before going to bed and this would produce Rapunzel-type hair! I sure was a believer and I tried! In any event, fast-forward to maturity, I did not get the Rapunzel tresses but I found that brushing does have some good things to doing it.

Benefits of brushing your hair:

  • It helps to distribute your body’s natural sebum throughout your hair and this helps to keep your hair shiny and soft.
  • Helps to remove tangles – as long as you use the correct brush and the right time.
  • Helps to remove grime and dust from your hair – especially if you cover your brush with an old nylon stocking and then brush your hair – you would be surprised how much grime your hair can collect during your day-to-day living.
  • Gives your scalp a healthy massage which helps to stimulate your hair follicles, bring blood to them and helps to promote growth.

Types Of Hair Brushes

There are various types of hair brushes that you can choose from – here is a list of a few, though it is not exhaustive:

  • round brush – usually used to blow-dry your hair, adding volume and movement. it might have a ceramic or metal base to heat up quickly.
  • vent brush – vents allow more air flow between the bristles
  • cushion brush – the more popular brand is Denman. The cushion helps to reduce hair breakage during detangling.
  • paddle brush – a brush with a broad base to help more exposure while blow drying your hair with flexible teeth.
  • detangler brush – widely spaced, flexible, nylon teeth to help make detangling easier.

The more common materials used to make the various brush handles are:

  • ebony
  • rosewood
  • beech
  • ABS plastic
  • polyacetal.

Common materials used to make the bristles are:

  • boar bristle
  • horsehair
  • nylon
  • stainless steel
  • goat hair

As you see, the possibilities for hair brushes are very interesting. Of course, each brush will serve a different function so be attentive in your choice. Read on to see my list of 10 Best Professional Hair Brushes 2019.

How To Care For Your Hair Brush?

Just like your hair, you should also care for the tools you use in your hair. My habit is to wash my combs and brushes each time I wash my hair…and I wash my hair at least twice a week – so at no time are my hair tools ‘really’ dirty.

Let’s remember, what good is it if your hair is clean and then you comb or brush it with dirty tools? The buildup (which is also on your tools), the grime, and the body oils – not to mention the residue from styling products, will get passed through your freshly cleansed hair IF you do not clean your hair tools regularly.

So here is a great way to ensure that your brush, as well as other hair tools that can be washed, stays clean:

  • Remove the hair from your brush using a comb – it can be a wide-tooth or a close-tooth comb (depending on the size and type of the brush).
  • Cleanse with either shampoo, body gel, or a simple mix of vinegar and baking soda in warm water.
  • Rinse well – especially if your brush has a wooden base, you have to remember that too much water can contribute to mold and you need to make sure that it dries completely. Maybe let it sit in the sun for a spell as well.
  • Lay the brush on a towel, bristles facing down and allow to dry.

When To Use A Hair Brush?

As strange as it may sound, there are times to use a hair brush! Not in the sense of an actual ‘time’ as in ‘at 07:00 am in the morning’, but rather as to the time that you are combing, styling, or working on your hair.

You can use a hair brush:

  • On dry hair
  • On wet hair
  • As a styling tool while blow-drying
  • As a massage tool

Of course, care should be taken when choosing a brush to perform any of the above-mentioned activities because it will differ. Care should also be taken when brushing your hair, even after having the right brush for the job. A great way to use a brush is to bend at the waist so that your blood will flow towards your head and bring nutrients to the scalp.

Also, remember that using a moisturizer or detangling product while your hair is wet, will also make for a tangle-free session.

Well, after all that being said, let’s now take a look at the 10 Best Professional Hair Brushes 2019 that you can choose from to make your hair look just as fabulous!

I had no idea there were so many styles of hair brushes. A good brush makes a big difference though and this article proved that and more. It also taught me I have to wash my brushes more often. I also wash my hair twice a week, making that a perfect time to also wash my brush and combs. I believe it’s time for me to choose a new brush as well.

Thanks Michelle. This was an incredibly helpful article.

Hello Michelle, For years the whole idea of brushes has really confounded me. I have that natural curly type of hair that just does not want a brush in it. And i just wondered what you suggested for that?
And great idea about washing brushes so often. In peace and gratitude, ariel

      Hello Ariel,
Thanks for visiting. Ah, the blessings of hair – curly, straight, whatever! The key to a good brush for curly hair is one whose bristles are not too close and best wide. This way it won’t snag at your curls. It really is a case of trial and error. If I had to choose, I would go with the brush by Wet Brush It can also be used on dry and wet hair. I hope this helps.

    Hi Michelle,
As a person with coarse curly hair, detangling is definitely a challenge for me. I have taken to wrapping my wet hair in a towel to squeeze instead of doing the old rub-a-dub-dub, finally after many many years of gently working the tangles out without ripping my hair out by the roots. I think the Beauty by Earth Detangling Brush is one for me to try out. I like the money back guarantee. I agree, it speaks volumes about the company’s confidence in its product.

Thanks for visiting, Annie. Yes, information is key or knowledge as they say. I have somewhat curly hair in certain areas and I need to be careful and more importantly, patient when it comes to detangling. I have used and still use my trusty Denman detangling brush. However, there are so many options today than there were when I was ‘growing-up’…the time when my mother would be ‘tugging through my curls’ and I would be ‘crying like a baby’! 🙂
SO, I totally ‘get it’! Good luck on your purchase and I hope it works wonders for your curls!

Hello there, Lisa. Thanks for stopping by. Yes, it is true. I, myself did not realize the variety of brushes until I decided to do this review. 🙂 Crave Naturals is a well-known brand and is quite popular, so I think this choice might be a good one. Hmm, the color choice – there are other colors but somehow this one gets the ‘rave’!
