10 Best Dry Shampoos 2018

In this article, 10 Best Dry Shampoos 2018, we will look at the definition for a dry shampoo, how to use it, how it compares to a liquid shampoo and then the different choices available. It is amazing how many people choose to use this type of shampoo for their individual reasons. Read on.

What Is A Dry Shampoo?

A shampoo is a well-known liquid that we use to cleanse our hair when it gets too grimy, greasy, or just plain ‘yucky’ to feel, and smell. This is a wet shampoo cleansing agent.

A dry shampoo is another way to remove the dirt, grime, excess hair oils from the scalp and hair without making the hair wet, per se. Hence the name, a dry shampoo. It is usually in a powder, spray, or mousse type form. It is more common in a powder form.

How To Use A Dry Shampoo

Using a dry shampoo to cleanse your hair is sometimes tricky. The reason being that you have to be mindful of how much you use to get your hair clean. Too much and you will end up looking a snowball and too little and you will feel as if nothing has been done.

Of course, like anything else, it is all a question of trial and error. You have to find that happy medium that works the best for you. A few points to consider when to use a dry shampoo:

  • how long before you use the dry shampoo – maybe 3-4 days after a wet shampoo cleanse
  • the color of your hair – it is suggested that you use a dry shampoo that may be formulated for your hair color so that it does not leave a noticeable ‘color difference’ once you are finished, due to the residue.
  • how often – you want to use the dry shampoo as a filler when your time does not permit a proper wet cleansing.  You don’t want to add any sort of buildup to your hair unnecessarily.

The Best Technique To Apply A Dry Shampoo

Here is a simple guideline as to how you can apply the dry shampoo to your hair to get the best results. Once you have found the best dry shampoo that works for your hair, maybe choosing one from this 10 Best Dry Shampoos 2018 list, then here is what you do:

  • shake the spray container very well and hold the spray about 6-12 inches. Spray at the root of your hair and in small sections so that the entire scalp area is covered.
  • bend at the waist and massage the scalp while in this position with your fingertips. If your scalp feels a bit damp from the product, simply use a blow dryer on a low setting and aim at the roots.
  • then brush through the hair as thoroughly as you can.

A Few Tips:

  • try to spray as far away from the hair as possible – this will minimize product buildup.
  • less is more – start with a little and then add more if needed.
  • dry shampoo is for dry hair application.
  • after spraying the product, give a few minutes for the oils on your scalp to be absorbed. Don’t spray too close to your head—it will prevent the product from being evenly distributed.
  • don’t become dependent on this ‘shortcut method’ to hair cleanliness. You still need to make the time to give your scalp and hair a ‘good old wet cleansing’.

 How Does It Compare

This section is about comparing the shampoos – wet (liquid) and dry (powder).

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Using Wet Shampoos

Advantages:

  • it gives a more thorough cleansing and leaves you with that squeaky clean feeling to your hair and scalp.
  • washes the dirt and grime from the scalp.
  • cleanses the full length of the hair.
  • helps to add moisture to your hair.

Disadvantages:

  • you need water to do the job and a convenient location to do the process.
  • can be time-consuming.
  • can be drying on your hair based on the type of product used and how often.
  • washes away the hair’s natural oil produced (sebum).

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Using Dry Shampoos

Advantages:

  • works well in a pinch for time.
  • can be done anywhere within reason and does not take too much effort other than the thorough. brushing out of the product.
  • can be used a texturizer or volumizer as well.
  • helps to eliminate odors and the smell of body sweat especially after a gym workout, cigarette smoke from the office party the night before.

Disadvantages:

  • can leave unsightly residue if you use too much and don’t do a thorough brushing. It is best not to apply it to the top of the hair as this will minimize the residue at the top of your hair. Also, just bend at the waist when you use the shampoo.
  • not all hair colors can benefit from using the product.
  • can be difficult for curly hair textures, the whole brushing process can be a challenge.

Let us now take a look at the 10 Best Dry Shampoos 2018 guide and see if there might be one that you may consider using.

    Hi Michelle,
This is a very good review of dry shampoos…I agree with you, that being in the shower, with the feel of the water on my skin and scalp, is a delight. I don’t think I would gravitate toward a dry shampoo personally.
I have curly hair and have been using latherless though wet shampoos and conditioners recently. I am curious about your rating for them…I am getting close to the end of the one I’m using (Deva) and wonder about how you will rank that one versus other alternatives. Can you look into that please?

      Hello Annie,
Thanks for your visit! Yes, when it all comes down to the ‘grass roots’ of the issue – it is personal preference indeed. I have heard of Deva and I have not tried it, but I know of people who have and have good thoughts about it. I will have to check it out and write an article on it – thanks for the idea.
All the best and I hope that you find a good solution for your hair.
