10 Best Dandruff Shampoos 2018 Guide For You!

In this article, 10 Best Dandruff Shampoos 2018 Guide, I will define the word dandruff, how you can get rid of it, whether there is a cure for it, as well as suggest natural remedies and premade dandruff hair products to help find a solution for this issue. I welcome your suggestions as well in the form of comments at the end of the article. Let’ begin.

What Is Dandruff?

According to Wikipedia, ‘Dandruff a skin condition that affects mainly the scalp. Symptoms include flaking and sometimes mild itchiness. It can result in social or self-esteem problems. A more severe form of the condition, which includes inflammation of the skin, is known as seborrheic dermatitis.’[1]

In other words, the old, dry skin cells that flake off the scalp is dandruff. Those same flakes can be small pieces or sometimes big pieces; sometimes the dry skin will break away from the scalp without any hair strands attached and sometimes, it can break away from the scalp with a few strands of hair attached to it. This is usually the more severe case of dandruff.

The fungus P.ovale is normally found on every human head. Climate, heredity, diet, hormones and stress impact how your body reacts to it. For people who suffer from bouts of dandruff, the natural process of scalp-cell renewal is accelerated when fighting off P. ovale, causing dead cells to fall off faster. This is a leading cause of dandruff and all the symptoms that go with it – the flaking, scaling and itching.

How Can You Get Rid Of It?

Dandruff is in no way a nice look at all. So this brings us to the million dollar question: how do we get rid of it? As there are quite a few reasons that there is dandruff and it might not be that easy or simple to make it ‘disappear’.

The more common reasons people have dandruff are:

  • Poor healthcare/hygiene habits
  • Inadequate moisture retention or provision
  • Genetics
  • Harsh hair products that constantly irritate your scalp and cause dryness and discomfort
  • External fungus or bacteria

In the long term, if dandruff seems to have ‘taken up full-time residence’ on your scalp, then you might want to consult with a dermatologist or trichologist to see if there needs to be more concise medical intervention.

Is There A Cure?

To date, there is no cure, per se, for dandruff. There are treatments that you can try and hope that they will reduce the itching or redness and general discomfort that can sometimes be associated with dandruff. Medicated shampoos are the more common forms of treating dandruff. These anti-dandruff or anti-fungal shampoos may contain any of the listed ingredients below, and have been known to help provide relief:

  • Ketoconazole
  • Selenium sulfide
  • Zinc pyrithione
  • Coal tar
  • Salicylic acids
  • Tea tree oil

It helps if you read the labels of any dandruff product you choose to use as well.

Natural Remedies

Of course, there are some home remedies which can also help the itching and the general discomfort. I must warn you that in following any suggestions here, please consult with a medical representative as this is not a source of medical advice. Home remedies will also take some time and consistent treatments before you may start seeing noticeable results.

Neem or Indian Lilac Hair Rinse

In India, the neem plant is a very common herb that is used to help hair loss and relieve itchy scalp.

Just use a handful of neem leaves and make a tea with it. Let the tea infuse for about 15 minutes. Once it is cool, strain it, and use it as a hair rinse at least two or three times a week after you cleanse your hair.

Coconut and Rosemary Scalp Oil

Everyone knows about coconut oil and its anti-bacterial properties. Rosemary also has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These two oils combined will ‘amp’ up the effect of cleansing your scalp as well as helping with hair growth.

Make a scalp oil mix using 2 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 teaspoon rosemary essential oil and mix completely. Massage the oil into the scalp. You can let it remain on the scalp for about 20minutes -one hour or even overnight, then rinse and continue with your hair routine. Do this at least once a week to see results.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Apple Cider Vinegar is well-known to help balance the pH balance of the scalp once applied. It also helps to inhibit the growth of yeast on the scalp as well as works as a cleansing agent. Just mix 2 tablespoons ACV, 2 tablespoons water, 1 teaspoon tea tree essential oil together.

Massage the scalp. Cover the hair with a plastic cap for 15 minutes. Rinse. Do this twice a week to see results. Also, you can also do an ACV rinse by combining equal parts of ACV and water in a 1:1 ratio, and simple rinse. There is no need to do anything after. Your hair will be shiny and clean. You will not smell the ACV once your hair dries.

Baking Soda Cleanse

You can also use baking soda to exfoliate your scalp. It will help to remove the dead cells and reduce the growth of fungi on the scalp. Simply combine 2 tablespoons baking soda, 2 tablespoons ACV, and 4 ozs water.

Massage onto the scalp and let it remain on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing. You can cleanse your hair as usual after and also do a deep-conditioning treatment to help moisturize your hair. Baking soda can be somewhat drying as well. Do this no more than once a month.

And for those of us, who may not have the time or the desire to mix and fix concoctions to put in our hair, then having a look at the premade dandruff hair products in this 10 Best Dandruff Shampoos 2018 Guide, should help to give you a few suggestions on where to start.

    Michelle,
I have used shampoo’s with the coal oil before. Some had a strong odor and I smelled like hot tar after using them. My dad always used Head and Shoulders, he had a full head of hair at 91.
I have more problems with dandruff in my beard than my hair. When I wear a black shirt, I have a little snow fall on my shirt. Which of these products would be gentle enough for the face or do they make something for dandruff of the beard.
